Sad News

One thing a lot of people do not know about me is that I love watching WWE - that's right, professional wrestling, this girl LOVES it. I haven't been watching for a horribly long time, only since roughly my junior year in high school. My interest has waned a bit just because I don't get to see it as often any more but this past weekend I went home because my mom had gotten tickets to a 'supershow' - this is for when both the RAW and the Smackdown cast are taping their shows on the same night in the same arena. This does not normally happen, but as they are going overseas this week, it was done. Sadly, Sunday morning we found news that one of my favorite wrestlers, Eddie Guerrero, had passed away - and in less than eighteen hours he would have once again been WWE Champion in the main event match. I am not quite sure why I felt compelled to write something about Eddie, a lot of people think wrestling is a joke and in some ways it is; the storylines get to be outrageous at times, and sometimes the gimmicks and costumes are funny, but these men and women are still athletes and still deserve respect. The shows went on with taping that evening, though nearly every single wrestler spoke about Eddie, either in an interview recorded just prior to the show, or live in the ring. Every wrestler who had a match that evening wore a simple black armband with the initials "EG", and often threw them to audience members when their match was over. All wore one of Eddie's signature t-shirts, also tossing them to audience members afterward. The tribute video, accompanied by "Hurt" (the Johnny Cash version) they showed was really well-done, given how little time they had to prepare it and I didn't think I was going to cry, but how can you not, when these huge macho guys like HHH, Batista, even Vince McMahon himself, are all crying. It was especially tough to see Eddie's best friends and family members - also fellow wrestlers - go on with their matches while dealing with this. There is nothing definite known yet, and autopsy was done yesterday but the results won't be back for a couple weeks. The coroner speculated it was a massive heart attack, as there was no indication of foul play, suicide, or anything drug/alcohol related. He was only 38 years old.
